PostSubject: Hair Myths   Sun May 25, 2008 7:22 pm

Here are some hair myths that have been busted, and I feel is important for everyone to know!

Brushing your hair 100 times is good and will give you a nice shine
Actually brushing your hair excessively contributes to more split ends and vulnerability to hair breakage. If you use a natural bristle brush (no plastic) than it does spread your hair's natural oils around which does make your hair glossier.

Cutting hair will make it grow faster or thicker
I always smile when I hear this one, this is actually NOT true one bit. Shorter hair often feels much thicker but cutting your hair will not make it grow faster. However, this does help get rid of split ends.

Your hair will often become immune to a shampoo if you use it often
There is no scientific evidence which proves that one's hair becomes immune to a shampoo after much use. If one uses styling products often then the built up from this, recent hair colouring, change in weather or even the change in water (soft or hard) are usually the main factors on why your hair may not feel as "clean" or "luscious" as before.

Split ends are repairable
How is it possible to repair dead cells? One's hair is purely dead cells, so it is actually impossible to repair split ends. The only solution: cut it.

Dandruff is when you have a dry scalp
This is not true. Many people often have a dry scalp and thus have flakes that look similar to dandruff. To solve this, it is best to pick a good shampoo that will bring moisture to your scalp. Dandruff on the other hand is a medical condition and the flakes are caused by excessive oil.

Mayonnaise is excellent as a home-remedy for the hair
I feel grossed out that people would consider putting the same thing in their sandwiches on their hair. This statement is not true! Mayonnaise contains ingredients such as vegetable oil, eggs, and vinegar. These just weigh down your hair.

That's all for now! I hope you learned some new facts!

I can definitally vouch for the shampoo one. I've used the same shampoo for almost a year now (which is rare since my mom believes in changing shampoo) and my hair looks just as good now as it did the first time I tried it.

...I can't handle counting to 100 in the first place, so no worries on that front for me. Thanks for the info though, I also love learning when myths are false. Though now I have to wonder... do people actually put mayo in their hair? Ewwww.

I've heard of mayo in the hair before, but only as an anti-lice remedy. You put on a whole lot close to your scalp and then put a plastic bag over it and leave it for a couple of hours (not too sure how long) and it hopefully suffocates them. I'm not sure if it works though, the one time I had lice back in grade school I just used a proper lice shampoo which was probably more effective. happy

Ah! Great advice since I didnt know a lot of it o_______o

Another myth:

Brushing is great for think, long hair.

NOT TRUE! People need to comb their hair! It gets the best results and doesn't break the hair.

If you want to deep condition your hair, mayo actually does work. It's the eggs. Think of it as a hair mask - wash it afterwards, otherwise it is gross (smells bad too).

well with the hair cutting myth, it's healthy to get trims. because then you get rid of your split ends and if you want to grow out your hair, it helps keep it healthy.

YESSS good tips! I don't really brush my hair ever, so it's really messy, but I hope it's healthy!

and I also heard another tip from xanga's lovelyish. to keep hair from getting damaged faster, wash your roots only with shampoo and the tip with conditioner.... don't apply to all places.
